Charleston Fashion Week glitters all around town, but also gives the chance for many of Charleston’s eager (and trendy!) students to build a career in the fashion industry. The Art Institute of Charleston provides student help for every level of production. From yearlong dream Fashion Week internships to opening week behind-the-scenes tours, AI students will see it all.
Participation runs the gamut from apprentice to master. Ashley Reid, former winning Emerging Designer 2009 and featured designer at Friday’s show, also happens to be a faculty member at the Art Institute of Charleston. The details of the evening will be managed by her students as a class project. The Art Institute is a presenting sponsor of CFW as well as the Emerging Designer competition, coordinating the design challenges with help from the Fashion and Retail Management department. The film making and video production students will be filming a documentary and presenting footage at Saturday’s finale, while photography students man “the photo pit” at the peak of the runway. Editorial coverage will be provided by students for the Institute’s magazine, dubbed AI magazine. Interior Design students crafted the media lounge at the Francis Marion for journalists, photographers, and interview-ees.
Art Institute students have even created their own exhibit entitled, “Fascinating ‘Fasten’ ing.” It’s a history of zippers, buttons, and hooks–and the associated mystique that runs through the end of May. The trade is win-win for both CFW and the Art Institute of Charleston, and we can’t wait to see where today’s budding art talent will go.
